WELCOME...

With the sustainable packaging industry swiftly growing to meet the increasing demands and expectations of the consumers, so too has the attendance of IntertechPira’s Sustainability in Packaging conference, which will be held March 2 – 4, 2009.

The 2008 conference, held March 11 – 13 in Orlando, Florida, attracted 274 attendees; a 38% increase in attendance over 2007. Participants represented 207 different affiliations and hailed from 34 US states, as well as Japan, Switzerland, Thailand, Canada and the United Kingdom.

A pre-conference workshop kicked off the event on March 11 with an introduction to the measurement of life cycle analysis and carbon footprint led by Gary Parker, Sustainability Director of CIBA Expert Services. Shawn Blenis also of Ciba Expert Services, Lise Laurin of Earthshift and Ed Klein of Tetra Pak rounded out the workshop program guiding attendees on how to roll out an LCA project and provided two thorough case studies concerning packaging for wine and measuring the carbon footprint of a packaging corporation.

John Kalkowski of Packaging Digest chaired this year’s plenary program and contributed alongside world-renowned speakers who addressed the most salient business and technical issues facing the sustainable packaging industry, resulting in a balanced, comprehensive discussion of the opportunities and challenges surrounding green design, consumers and supply chain, recycling and waste management, materials and technology, metrics and bioplastics. Conversations on the day’s proceedings continued during the various networking breaks, roundtable luncheons and receptions. Networking functions, held in the exhibit area, afforded participants the opportunity to interact with and learn more from exhibitors DK USA, Inc., Dyna-Tech Adhesives, Hazen Paper Company, ITW Zippak, Key Tech Corp/LOCK N’ POP, MeadWestvaco, Packaging Digest, Rovema Packaging Machines, Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc, Unifoil Corporation and Worthington Steelpac Systems.

“The IntertechPira “Sustainability in Packaging” conference was an extremely informative industry event. It was content rich and I was impressed with the global diversity and quality of the presenters. I was never bored. There was a relevant activity for everyone from the extensive choices of breakout sessions to the networking mini trade show. Well done!”
James Downham, President & CEO, Packaging Association of Canada
